But what if you are confused as to what to say? What if you are concerned with using the right words? Have you ever been (or are you) worried about what to say? We give you an example from scripture of one chosen yet reluctant to speak for God.
But Moses said to the Lord, "Please, Lord, I have never been a skilled speaker. Even now, after talking to you, I cannot speak well. I speak slowly and can't find the best words""
Then the LORD said to him, "Who made a person's mouth? And who makes someone deaf or not able to speak? Or who gives a person sight or blindness? It is I, the Lord. Now go! I will help you speak, and I will teach you what to say."
But Moses said, "Please, Lord, send someone else."
But God did not send someone else. Instead He told Moses to use his brother Aaron who was able to speak well. Moses would tell Aaron what to say as God had revealed it to Moses. In today's passage Jesus is talking about our concern over what to say when we are faced with giving testimony about Him in a setting which is hostile to the Christian faith. He assures us that the Holy Spirit will give us the thoughts, the words, and the courage which we so often lack ....There may be times when you are concerned about sharing your faith in Christ with someone or when you are challenged in your faith by other people. Rely upon the fact that God is the source of your thoughts and words at those times.
Our only task is to open our minds in
calm expectation of wisdom beyond our
own capacity. We were never meant to
be adequate on our own. It is when we think we are adequate that we get into
trouble. A Christian is not one who works for the Lord but one in whom and
through whom the Lord works. We are not to speak for God but to yield our tongues to express the thoughts the Lord has implanted.
